A Place Built to Give Back

Tucked along the rivers of western Michigan, Oak Heart Lodge was not built as a getaway. It was built with a specific purpose in mind.

For the lodge's founders, that purpose is simple. Honor disabled veterans and create a space where they can step away, connect, and begin to heal.

“We felt it was important to honor our disabled military members,” they shared. “Without their sacrifice, the world we know would be very different.”

What started as a dilapidated cabin became something much more. The structure was completely rebuilt and expanded, transformed into a dedicated retreat space designed specifically for veterans. It is not used as a personal vacation home. Every detail serves the same mission. Create an environment where veterans feel welcome, supported, and at ease.

More Than Fishing

At its core, Oak Heart Lodge is a fly fishing destination. Veterans spend their days on the water, guided by experienced professionals, learning new skills and reconnecting with the outdoors.

But the impact goes well beyond fishing.

There is no rigid program structure. No packed schedules or prescribed outcomes. Instead, the lodge creates space for something more organic.

Connection.

“We don’t run specific programs,” they explained. “We provide the opportunity to connect and heal, and let the guests take it from there.”

Evenings often end around a bonfire. Stories are shared. Barriers come down. Friendships form naturally in a setting that feels far removed from everyday stress.

A Personal Commitment

Oak Heart Lodge operates differently than many retreat centers. There is no major fundraising arm or institutional backing behind it.

The lodge is primarily supported by its founders, with occasional help from family and friends. It is a personal investment, both financially and emotionally.

That commitment shows up in the experience itself. From coordinated travel and gear setup to meals and time on the water, every detail is handled with care. The goal is simple. Remove friction so guests can focus on being present.

The team on the ground plays a major role in that experience, especially lead guide and host Chris Raines, along with a network of dedicated staff and guides who help bring each week to life.

A Natural Partnership with Warriors & Quiet Waters

This year, Oak Heart Lodge partnered with Warriors & Quiet Waters to host program alumni for four weeks of fully supported experiences.

The alignment between the two organizations was immediate.

“We had a very positive experience with WQW,” they said. “Our missions align perfectly. We’re honored to host their alumni for four weeks this year.”

Oak Heart Lodge has allowed us to expand what we can offer our alumni in a really meaningful way. It helps us continue delivering on our promise that once someone comes through our program, they’re part of this community for life.”

The Impact of a Few Days

While each stay lasts less than a week, the effect can be lasting.

Guests consistently describe the experience as meaningful and restorative. Time on the river, shared meals, and conversations around the fire create a rhythm that allows people to decompress in a real way.

“We’re often told about the healing effect even a short five-day trip has,” they shared.

It is not complicated. It is not over-engineered.

It is simply a place, intentionally built, where veterans can reconnect with themselves and each other.

"Oak Heart Lodge is a treasure.  This beautiful lodge on the banks of the Muskegon River is an amazingly warm, welcoming, and rejuvenating setting.  The founders, management team, and first-class guides provide a memorable and reconnecting environment for our WQW alumni.  I could not be more grateful to the Oak Heart Lodge team for the wonderful opportunity they are providing WQW veterans."

Looking Ahead

Oak Heart Lodge continues to refine the experience each year, improving everything from travel logistics to time on the water. But the core idea remains unchanged.

Create a space. Welcome, veterans. Let the rest happen naturally.

For Warriors & Quiet Waters alumni who step onto those Michigan rivers, it is more than a fishing trip.

It is a reminder that spaces like this exist. And that people are willing to build them.

"The gift that Oak Heart provides to veterans, a week of guided fishing on amazing rivers, a beautiful lodge in the woods on the river, calmness, and camaraderie is amazing, and we are grateful for it.  The new partnership between WQW and Oak Heart is a perfect pairing of two amazing organizations.   I am very excited for the future."
